5.0 out of five stars hard, September 7, 2008
By KB (America!) See all my reviews This review is from: Peerless PA740 Articulating Wall Mount for 22″ to 40″ Displays (Black) (Electronics) This is a hard, well made product. It comes with everything you may need as well as an adapter plate, spacers, and different screws. Since I was only mounting a 32″ Westinghouse LCD TV that had standard mounting holes on the back my installation did not require the extra stuff. The 32″ TV I mounted weighs about 32 pounds after its table mount is removed, so this wall mount handles it effortlessly.

Keep in mind that this is an folding, jointed device, so you’ll have to mount it to the wall (in a stud) off center if you want it to fold flat against the wall and be focused. Of course if you want to keep your TV sticking out from the wall permanently then center it. Make sure to measure for your needs. Here is a link to a pic with the dimensions:

So, do I recommend this product? Absolutely!

5.0 out of five stars greatly suggested., September 21, 2008

(REAL NAME) This review is from: Peerless PA740 Articulating Wall Mount for 22″ to 40″ Displays (Black) (Electronics) remaining choice, simple, strong reasonable price.
I installed it on a 40″ Samsung LN40A630 LCD panel. Be sure you use up the difference on an correct stud finder so that you hit the stud properly. You can also also want to buy two stainless #14 x 2 1/2″ flat head wood screws, the ones in the kit are a touch soft and round out easily.

5.0 out of five stars Perfect and GREAT Price, September 3, 2008
By AmazonLover (Nashville, TN) See all my reviews () This review is from: Peerless PA740 Articulating Wall Mount for 22″ to 40″ Displays (Black) (Electronics) I was a little cynical of this product because when I viewed the exact model from peerless.Com it was $220. But I used the tables on peerless.Com to tell me which model could work for my TV I have a 40″ Samsung, 40lbs and it said this one, among many others, could do. I ordered, it came fast, and it is perfect. It was a new product, completely boxed, had all the parts, and great directions. I was surely worried about hanging a (expensive) TV on the wall, but not after putting this mount in not only was it easy to install but it’s heavy responsibility. It works like a charm moving up, down, left, right, close to the wall, far from the wall.

Ultimately, it works beautifully and I saved over $150! Way to go Amazon.

5.0 out of five stars great network tuner with many restrictions., August 10, 2008
By JarOfSonicMen See all my reviews This review is from: SiliconDust HDHomeRun HDHR US Dual Networked High meaning Digital TV (White) (Electronics) OK, let us get the cons out of the way first: This box doesn’t have a slot for CableCards, which means that you aren’t going to use it to record anything except either OTA digital TV (from an antenna) or the big networks on clear QAM from your cable. That is just the way it’s, that is what this box was intended to do, and that can not be changed. It’ll not pick up analog or encrypted digital cable channels. It doesn’t interact with your TV at all, unless you’re using your TV as a computer monitor. This isn’t the way to change your old TV to get digital TV.

So what good is it? You may be able to use it to pick up digital TV from an antenna or unencrypted QAM (usually network) cable signals, and stream to your computer for watching or recording.

I have two of these on my local network. I use them to stream Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS to my MythTV box, where I record everything broadcast by the Big four in primetime onto two 750GB disks, which hold about two weeks of the programming I record. I demoted my TiVos to cable channel and backup network use.

If your computer isn’t dual core, it is not powerful enough to watch HDTV with (though it’ll do OK recording, if you have something else to watch with/on).

This unit also has a builtin infrared port that will transmit the codes from your remote control to your computer after you configure it.

It does come with many software, but I do not know what it does, I already had my older HDHomerun hooked up, and just added this one in MythTVSetup. As another reviewer mentioned, there isn’t a toll free number to call for support, they use the internet and forums at silicondust. It is worth many time poking around those forums to see what people are doing, and what problems people are having, to see if this item is really what you need.

It does exactly what I want, and I am considering adding a 3rd one for PBS and CW recording, and to experiment with building a Gray Hoverman HDTV antenna.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST it’s vital to use only RG6 coax cables and 2MHz rated splitters for most cable HDTV. One foot of RG58 between my splitter and my HDHomerun totally destroyed the signal to that input. Do not convince yourself yours is broken till you know your cables are good.

5.0 out of five stars four Years of dependable Use, September 23, 2008
By Glenn R. Howes (Nashua, NH) See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME) This review is from: SiliconDust HDHomeRun HDHR US Dual Networked High meaning Digital TV (White) (Electronics) What I like about this product is the flexibility a networked device delivers. All the computers in my house can access it as needed: the Linux box running MythTV, the Vista PC running Media Center, the Mac running EyeTV. My iPhone can access the HDHomerun to check on antenna signal quality (using an iPhone application I wrote: Signal GH). A tuner in a PCI slot or on a USB dongle could not be almost as useful and could tend to be harder to setup as special device drivers could be obliged. And if every computer had own tuner, my antenna signal strength could be split down to nothing.

I was an early adopter of this gadget, buying one in November 2006. It was dependable and has good sensitivity for over the air transmits hooked up to my rooftop antenna. The maker released a steady stream of firmware updates ensuing in a gadget you may be able to rely on not to crash. As a software engineer I am impressed with the quality of the publicly available code for controlling the device.

I’ve found it to be very easy to use with MythTV, making it one of the not many easy things about MythTV. Both tuners are connected to my home’s antenna system. I have a big UHF antenna with a pre amp on a short mast on my roof about 30 miles from the big cluster of antennas near Boston, MA. On instances when the trees are full of leaves, I get many intermittent picture loss on two of my channels, but for most of the year I get free network TV of great quality, though I wish NBC and PBS could cut down on their sub channels.

My Kill A Watt tells me my HDHomerun draws 6W, which is not awful, and newer revisions are recognized for somewhat better power handling but something to think about for people worried about still another constant electricity sink.

In spring of 2010, I also bought the blue single tuner model. It appears to be just the same quality, easy use, and signal locking of it is expensive sibling. I bought it over another dual tuner as there are never four good programs on simultaneously but on occasion there are three.

5.0 out of five stars great device the future of television?, May 16, 2008
By John S. Lyon Smith (Redmond, WA USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: SiliconDust HDHomeRun HDHR US Dual Networked High meaning Digital TV (White) (Electronics) This product is great. After receiving the device I literally plugged it in to the cable TV, network and power, installed the EyeTV 3.0 software on my iMac and BAM!! It worked. Beautiful high meaning TV TV right on my Mac desktop. I can not fault the device. Yes it’s ugly but you may be able to put in a cupboard on on a counter and never have to look at it again. I really do not understand why does not stock the device. The only downsides that I encountered are with the Electronic Program Guide for the EyeTV software which really uses TitanTV. It took 24 hours for it to download the 1st program guide, , then I had to manually tweak all the stations.

5.0 out of five stars BEST TV BARGAIN on Amazon!!!, December 25, 2011
By MadQueen (California, USA) See all my reviews () This review is from: TCL L40FHDF12TA 40 Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV with 2 Year Warranty (Electronics) I bought this TV on sale in Dec. 2011 for under $300. It is an updated model of TCL L40FHDF11TA. It is put in a master bedroom. I will rate each group in Amazon’s system of one to five stars. My ratings are relative to how this TV stacks up against other TVs in its price range.

SETUP (3 stars)
The TV was packed in the shipping box (43.5″ x 31″ x 10.5″) with two yellow nylon straps holding it together. (If your straps are missing, the shipper may have broken them while carrying and dropped the TV.) For wall mounting, you need a VESA 400x400mm compliant mount like this, this, or this. I used the glass stand. If you are trying to fit it into a counter, the dimensions with stand are 38.5″ x 27″ x 9″ (without stand: 38.5″ x 24.5″ x 4″). The power cord does not have a power brick attached which is a plus. I am using a learning common remote which did find codes for this TV. Attempt ‘RCA’ if ‘TCL’ did not work for you. I propose using an common remote since it is much easier to replace than to replace the original remote if you break it.
Some remote codes amassed for reference:
DirecTV: 11447
Comcast: 11447
Dish Network: 503
AT&T U Verse: 1000
There may be a problem with the “TV powering on unexpectedly.” If your ‘SW Version’ reads V8 0RSC801 LF1V041, you are OK. Otherwise, download the firmware update at TCL’s web site onto any FAT formatted device. (I used my phone.) Remember to wait at least ten seconds after it says “Completed” before unplugging the USB cord. (I waited 30 seconds to be safe.) I am guessing this is where many people may messed up and broke the TV.

PICTURE (5 stars)
The LCD panel is made by Samsung with their logo observable in the back (picture posted). As with most LCD TVs these days, the screen is glossy and not matte, so you do have to watch out for glare. After powering up the TV which took about 15 seconds, I changed the predetermined picture setting from the default ‘ECO’ to ‘Cinematic’. Cinematic/Movie mode is typically the setting that comes closest to a professional calibration. (If you are interested in doing your TV calibration, check out the Disney WOW blu ray, search “AVS HD 709″ for a free one, or attempt my “quick picture calibration” below.) It has five zoom modes, with ‘No Overscan’ being favored. If it is not available, decide ‘Full’ for the least total of cropping. I watched the TV from an suggested distance of about seven to eight feet. After hooking up my blu ray player with HDMI (not included) and ensuring it is 1080p (by pressing the ‘Info’ button), I tried watching many black movies (Batman Begins and The black Knight) as a stress test. I did not notice any evident picture defects. The looking at angle is good for an LCD. The contrast is good, with listed 4000:1 contrast percentage. I compared it to my living room LED with ten million:1 contrast percentage. The LED has somewhat better contrast with deeper blacks, though certainly not 2500 times better, so I would not read too much into contrast ratios when shopping for TVs. There are some nitpicks. There is slight motion blurring caused by its slightly slow eight ms answer time and 60 Hz refresh rate. There is a slight uniformity problem in the upper corners, obvious in an all black picture. The yellow color is a little off. None of they are big problems; I have seen much worse at this price range, so no stars are subtracted.

AUDIO (3 stars)
The two eight watt speakers are passable for a bedroom. It has a nice equalizer menu with presets and five manually adjustable bars. It has Dolby Digital sound, but you certainly have to add your speakers to take benefit of it. You may be able to hook up your speakers via coaxial audio out, RCA out (white/red), or headset out. There is no optical audio out (Toslink) and no ARC (audio return channel). I hooked up a Sony bookshelf system via RCA out which did improve the sound considerably. The headset out was not working on my unit, but I am ok with it since I do not use headphones.

GAMING (5 stars)
I hooked up my Xbox 360 via HDMI, changed the Xbox ‘HDTV settings’ to 1080p and ‘Reference Levels’ to extended, and turned off all image processing on the TV using my settings below. I tried a couple games (MW3, BF3, Skyrim, Madden 12, and Forza 4) and did not notice any input lag. (Results should be alike with PS3 and Wii.) By the way, never hook up your gaming system with yellow composite RCA cables. LCD/LED and plasma TVs can not natively display interlaced video, so they will have to use up time deinterlacing so create extra input lag.

PC (4 stars)
I connected my PC with a VGA cable. (Results should be alike with DVI or HDMI.) I had to change my Windows monitor settings to “unhide modes that this monitor can not display” to get the native resolution of 1920×1080. For testing, I opened a Word document set to Times New Roman 6 point font and had no trouble reading it with ‘Sharpness’ at 0. You may be able to use it as a big monitor as long as you do not expect it to have the clearness of a 22″ monitor when looking at inside 3′. (It’s got the same total of pixels spread across 3.4 times the area.) When viewed at 5′ or more, clearness will not be a problem.

MEDIA (3 stars)
The USB port accepts pictures and music but not videos. There is no internet streaming, which I favored. I have lots of devices able of streaming, so I do not want to pay extra for a feature I do not need.

RELIABILITY (4 stars)
The TCL FHDF11TA series has over 1000 reviews on with an average ranking of four stars, which is most likely as good as it gets for a generic brand. I also like the fact that it has a two year warranty instead of 1. The only concern is that the warranty is being done by A & D Electronics (the company that TCL outsourced for its warranty claims) which has an F ranking on BBB. The poor ranking is a result of, I think, a shortage of staff. If you are lucky and catch them on a low volume of repairs, you will get prompt service; otherwise, you may have to be patient and pervasive to get your TV repaired. (FYI, their number is 877 470 7766, 9AM 5PM PST, M F.) If all else fails, attempt contacting Amazon. Many people did have success after the 30 day return period. You may also add one extra year of warranty by buying with Mastercard or AmEx. And if you have Costco membership, you may be able to buy SquareTrade to add three extra years of warranty for a total of five for $30 (cheaper than Amazon).

PRICE (5 stars)
Free shipping, free 30 day return, delivered to your door in two days for under $300 is hard to defeat. Also allows you to do a price modification if the price drops inside 14 days.

OTHER TVS
Here are two TVs I considered before settling on the TCL:
LG 32LK330 This is a good basic name brand 32″ LCD TV suited for a bedroom. It only has 64 of the TCL’s looking at area though.
LG 42LK450 This 42″ LCD TV has good all around performance and is suited as a main TV in an apartment, although at a price premium.

MISC fast PICTURE CALIBRATION
1. Change predetermined to ‘Cinematic’. After looking into many calibration patterns, I find both the default ‘Brightness’ of 50 and ‘Contrast’ of 80 to be spot on.
2. Change ‘Sharpness’ to 0. With a clear HD source, you should not have to artificially increase the sharpness. If words look blurry, you may be able to play around with it.
3. Change ‘Noise Reduction’ to low. Alike to Sharpness, you do not need much image processing with a clear source.
4. I find the default ‘Backlight’ of 60 to be suited for a dimly lit room. With most lights on, 80 looks about right. If sunlight is present, increase it to 100. Change it as indicated by your room lighting and eye comfort level.
5. (optional) For adjusting colors, you usually have to use filters with a calibration disc. I like to do it by eye using my own pictures (preferably scanned studio pictures). We should all be able to pick out the nuances of our own skin tones. Also, play a familiar movie and pause when you have a clear shot of a face, then change. I find the default ‘Color’ of 40 to be acceptable. If you can not get ‘Color’ to look right, attempt changing ‘Color Temperature’ by one , then go back to changing ‘Color’.

3.0 out of five stars Great product with many buyer service reservations (SNAFU rectified, but still happened), December 22, 2011
By Brandon Barr (Atlanta, GA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: TCL L40FHDF12TA 40 Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV with 2 Year Warranty (Electronics) UPDATE 12/27/11:

Since writing this review, I has been contacted by phone both by TCL directly and the management of A&D Electronics and they’re now shipping me a new unit, 2 day air, and have profusely apologized for the broad communication issues I received throughout the service procedure.

I still believe TCL could gain from a important investment and restructuring in their buyer service workflow, and the frustrations of my customer service experience will weigh into my choice to buy again from them. But they have resolved my issue in a high touch manner, so I moved my original review of one star to three stars. I hope that others who experience alike buyer service woes may also find resolution for their issues.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: (1 Star)

I loved this TV and really bought two more, for my family and my office. The picture quality for the price is unbeatable. But, after five months, the screen developed a strange issue where a two inch strip of pixels displayed a reversed (left to right) image. I call buyer service, and after a long wait talked with someone who took my information and asked me to unplug the TV and plug it back in. When that did not work, she said “I can not assist you more, so I am escalating your case to level 2.” She gave me a different number to call which is for many company called AD Electronics USA. I called it for four days straight and got a perpetual busy signal. , I was able to get through. The man I talked with (cs10@adelectronicsusa.Com) asked me to email him my receipt and a short description of the problem, , then said he could call me back because they closed for the night.

That was ten days ago. He’ll not react via email or phone. So I am stuck with a broken TV and little option to get it fixed. I’m totally flabbergasted at how this company treats customers and sick that I have loudly suggested it to other people as a quality TV.

4.0 out of five stars Great for the price, November 25, 2011
By Tracey Erwin See all my reviews () This review is from: TCL L40FHDF12TA 40 Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV with 2 Year Warranty (Electronics) 12/6/11 Update about the random powering on issue. Called TCL buyer service. They were aware of this bug and walked me through doing a firmware update. Phone call and update took all of ten minutes. You go to the web site, download the update, put it on a memory stick, input the stick into the USB port on the TV et voila! two clicks and 30 seconds afterward you are done.

Bought this t.V. For a new apartment and with some caveats, am happy with my buy. The picture quality is great, sound totally adequate for my needs. The only oddities are these. The T.V. Turns itself on randomly. I turn it off and someplace between one and eight hours afterward it turns back on. Read the manual found nothing to explain it, googled and found one user with a alike complaint who was told to contact the maker. That looks somewhat ominous I’ll contact the company and post afterward with the result. The second oddity is that COMCAST doesn’t have the codes from TCL to program the Comcast remote. The installer had thought I could find something on the Internet and I did, but not for my model. But, after reading that TCL builds many RCA t.V.S I went back to Comcast page on programming your remote and checked the RCA codes. Turned out that the “most likely” RCA code worked like a charm.
