Initially, I planned on to get one of the new Sharp 60″ Quattron models, and headed to a close big box store to check out the selection. Picture quality was most vital to me, where I was wanting to accept a plasma if it blew me away, but I was certainly siding towards LCD or LED. I was not too shocked to find that while plasmas were nice, they were not “that” nice, and settled in to the Sharp.

On my way out, I thought I’d check a couple of the 3D displays, just to be 100 sure I was not making a buy I’d regret once 3D content became more extensive. I looked at a couple of Panasonic models with active shutter glasses, and found that the 3D looked satisfactory, but the glasses were not comfy on my head or to my eyes. A DirecTV rep all but insisted that I look at a high end Samsung model connected to a DirecTV receiver, and I now noticed that to get the thing to display 3D seemingly obliged messing with the DirecTV remote, the Samsung remote, and continually re syncing the active glasses. “No, thanks.” I thought.

Then I noticed an unloved LG display, with a can (yes, an real bucket) of scratched passive glasses. No way was this going to look good, but it was not like I did not have some minutes to spare.

I was totally blown away. By far, the best 3D experience I have seen. Standing about six feet from the screen, there was a scene from an IMAX documentary where a fish seriously looked like it came out about halfway between where I standed, and where the TV was. And I could see parasitic fish on the nose of that fish, moving around. It was unbelievable, clear, and I knew it had to be pretty costly. Much to my surprise, it was in the same league as the Panasonic models. I had to have it.

Doing more research online, I saw that Amazon’s price was better (better, in fact, than a national warehouse club sells the non 3D variant of this TV for). I ordered on a Monday, and scheduled my (free) shipping for Thursday afternoon. The delivery people came 15 minutes from the start of my four hour delivery window, with no annoyance at all.

Out of the box, the picture quality on this TV is pretty awesome. Better than I remembered it being in the store, for sure. But, I did notice that motion seemed really. Strange. I was not sure if it was my satellite receiver, or the TV, but things just did not seem to move naturally. After spending many time adjusting the dejudder and deblur settings, I was able to make the motion normal. But then, I figured, I may also calibrate everything. Using a mix of the calibration feature on the Life Blu Ray and suggested settings on different forums, I was able to accomplish an totally stunning picture. Seriously, this thing seems it cost hundreds upon hundreds more when it is calibrated.

1080i / 1080p content looked totally smart. SDTV, on the other hand, is not the best I have seen. It is surely satisfactory, and arguably on the better side of what is usually found on LCD / LED models, but I’d most likely think about to get something different if most of your looking at is going to be sub DVD quality content.

Then it was time to break out the 3D. I snagged a copy of Tron: Legacy (Four Disc Combo: Blu ray 3D / Blu ray / DVD / Digital Copy) and spent most of the movie sitting with a dumb smile on my face. The picture quality and depth were remaining. Do not fall for the “active / passive” hype. Watching 3D content with the LG’s passive glasses is certain to anybody who can see. And going back to my memory of the Samsung set, when the LG detects 3D, a box pops up that tells you to put your glasses on. That is it. No messing around endlessly with modes to get it working.

I then decided to play with the 2D to 3D function on many HD channels and standard Blu Ray discs, and was really pretty surprised. More frequently than not, the TV looks to procedure the image as you’d expect to see 3D. It is not something I’d want to do all the time, but I have to watching Moulin Rouge! Blu ray with 2D to 3D was really pretty awesome.

The fitted applications were kind of a mixed bag. To get the TV on my WPA2 wireless network was pretty simple, and the Wii inspired remote worked better than I had projected. The Netflix and On Demand apps were both hard arguably better than what you’d find on a Roku, and miles ahead of the ones fitted to my Sony Blu Ray player. The other apps were less than remarkable. Bringing up the weather app is more time consuming than just tuning to the Weather Channel, as an example. The included web browser is good for “Hey, look what my TV can do” showing off, but you are most likely not going to want to fire it up to look at IMDB in the center of a show.

All things considered, this is most likely the best value around. While I lost 5″ of screen real estate over what I planned on purchasing first, the difference in picture quality alone was a decent tradeoff. To get 3D was gravy, to say the least. Unless this thing sets my house on fire, I’d be hard pressed to recommend anything else inside a couple hundred dollars.

We have edited this review because all the initial concerns we had about this TV have been addressed and corrected with some simple steps. Feel free to skip down to the bottom to see what we did to make this TV look AMAZING! : )

I just learned a couple of things.

First of all, I learned that bigger isn’t generally better.

We had bought the 47″ variant of this TV (.) and were totally blown away by the image quality. It’s PRISTINE! (Easily a 5 star+ set.) In fact, we were so happy with that unit that we thought we may want just a somewhat bigger TV instead. We ordered the 55″ model and planned on returning the 47″ one. Well, surprisingly, we are sending back the 55″ TV. The image is observably less pristine (grainy/pixelated/dull on the highest resolution blu ray content. And more amazingly, the 3D maked us sick. (So weird, since we totally LOVED the 3D on the 47″ model.) Too bad. Because we were really excited about the bigger size. But we’d much rather have quality over quantity.

Interestingly, it was my wife (who claims to not notice the “soap opera effect” of the new LCDs) who was most disturbed by the quality loss. It glaredly evident to her (as it was to me. Though I did not want to admit it, since I really wanted the bigger model). If my wife notices the difference, trust me. It is there. I afterward did a side by side comparison between the 55LW5600 and the 47LW5600 which confirmed our suspicions.

Here’s a bit more detail:

IMAGE QUALITY:

On this 55″ model, image quality of the highest resolution blu ray discs was noticably less sharp, more pixelated/grainy, and in general just more dull. I played greatly with the settings but couldn’t overcome these issues.

Alternatively, pictures on the 47″ model and crisp and GORGEOUS. My suspicion is that the resolution on both units is same, but it’s spread over a greater screen area on the bigger unit, ensuing in the capability to more easily see image faults. I haven’t found specifications to confirm this, though. We sit about 10 12 feet away from the TV, and we did notice a important improvement in our view of the image quality when moving back about five feet. But, the arrangement of our room doesn’t let us to sit this distance from the TV. So the 47″ is the evident choice for us.

I could say that you shouldn’t think about the 55″ variant if you intend on sitting closer than twelve feet to the TV. More out than that, you may have a better experience.

3D EFFECT:

I also learned that 3D can (under certain circumstances) make us sick. Weird, because we have generally enjoyed 3D in the theater. And we totally LOVED 3D on the 47″ variant of this TV. But, on this 55″ model, there were many weird fluttering effects, particularly in fast motion video. We also noticed many kind of weird boxy/pixelated effect throughout fast scene changes, or when going from bright to black (and vice versa) scenes.

None of these 3D issues occurred with the 47″ variant. In fact, not only was the image impeccable, but the 3D looked totally gorgeous (and appeared to be completely HD quality with no obvious resolution loss).

So, if you are debating (like we did) about if to go with LG’s 47″ variant (47LW5600), or to go a little bigger with the 55″ model. I’d propose sticking with the 47″ TV unless you’ll be sitting a pretty important distance away from the set.

So, what else did I learn? It turns out my wife’s a videophile! Who knew?!? : )

UPDATE ISSUES FIXED:

We have found ways to make modifications that have totally ELIMINATED the issues we spoke of earlier!! So we have now changed our star ranking from two to 5. (Yeah, it is that most of an improvement!) : )

2D IMAGE FIX: Just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to enhance the 2D video quality of this 55″ model considerably by using the settings given on hometheater.Com hometheater+dot+com. (Just search for “LG 55LW5600 3D LCD HDTV”.) Blu rays now look very good. And MUCH better than the default settings.

3D IMAGE FIX: also, we found a setting on the TV that lets you to change the 3D image in such a way that it positions the image more back into the screen (essentially virtually giving us the extra three feet back we felt we required to eliminate eye strain and nausea). To access, simply click the fast menu button while 3D content is onscreen . Then, choose the top choice to change the 3D settings. From there, the bottom choice lets you to send the 3D image more back (to the left) or you may also bring it more forward going the other direction. We found the setting of ” 5″ (about half way to the left) to be a good agreement, improving the 3D image for us greatly (so that we not felt nauseous when viewing) and still kept us from seeing ghosting. (Going all the way to the left presented many faint ghosting and did not seem to be needed since adjusting it half way seemed to alleviate the illness we felt when watching 3D content.)

So, with that, and the video settings we found at hometheater+dot+com ( keeps removing my link, hopefully my pseudo URL will work for now), we have now fallen in love with the 55″ model.

Our last VERDICT, then, is that the 47″ model is better out of the box. Plug it in and WOW! but, while the 55″ model requires a bit more work, it can sooner or later look every bit as good as the 47″ set. It’s really STUNNING! we’re keeping the 55″ set after all, and are very happy with it. It took a little extra work, but it was well worth it.

Background This TV is mounted on the provided stand and placed over a media chest. The TV sits above the seated viewers. Replaces a five year old 40″ Sony Bravida LCD panel. Connected to a HD TiVo and a Sony Blu Ray.

Set Up Fast and easy. The manual is adequate, but not excellent. The “Pro” video set up is a nice feature and gets the picture looking its best quickly. The HDMI cables come out of the back of the TV at a right angle on the left side rear. Placement isn’t best since HDMI cables have a tendency to be inflexible and sharp bends aren’t suggested. There’s enough room to make the light bend and align the cables, but tie wraps are a must for more than one cable.

Stand Basic. Spins entitlement to left, but a tilt feature should have been included. See comments about 3D for explanation. A cable management slot on the stand could have been nice to clean up the cables for those who aren’t wall mounting.

Picture Sharp and clear. No motion artifacts. Superior to the Sony it replaces, but this was projected caused by the technology enhancements since the buy of the Sony.

Sound Decent for ultra thin panel televisions. If you need audio quality, I recommend an external amplifier and speakers. For normal looking at, the sound is satisfactory and voices are clear.

3D Blu ray Comparable to my costly active 3D TV without the flicker and related issues. Though the picture quality isn’t as high, I challenge most viewers to tell the difference. As stated in other reviews, there’s many ghosting if the TV tilt doesn’t point the TV straight at the viewer (A tilting stand could have been a nice feature for LG to add, but alas, it only swivels!). To the right and left of the TV, there’s no degradation of the 3D experience.

2D to 3D This TV does a superior job of converting 2D into 3D. It looks to excel when the film has depth of field and the less action, but the in general experience is good. Depending on my previous experience with my Active 3D TV, I projected far less and found this to be a compelling 3D experience.

Internet TV Linked to quickly and easily. Netflix was excellent. Many buffering issues left me wishing that the TV stored more of he content locally as the video streamed. Web Browsing was less than adequate and I didn’t find it a useful experience, with the TV not generally reacting to the commands of the remote. Apps are restricted and it made me wonder why someone doesn’t develop an Android established TV or a iOS established TV so that there may be more Aps to access.

Remote The standard remote is decent and well laid out, but unless you own LG parts, you’ll have to have many remotes. A learning remote could have been a nice feature. Key back light is dimmer than I could like.

Magic Wand Remote Think Wii controller for a TV. Alike to other people, I had trouble with the answer of the remote and found it worked best when I sitted straight in front of the TV. I felt that the software could use more optimization and I do not see this now as product differentiation and I could not purchase this TV for this capability alone.

Recommendation I could recommend this TV and I’m pleased with the buy.

Here are (5) fast ways to turn this 3 star sub five hundred dollar TV into a 5 star one thousand dollar set.

1. Do not believe all the negative reviews. The picture on this set is amazing, but not right out of the box. It needs many adjusting. Refer to J. Finkel’s review for the exact settings. The picture is beautiful after ten minutes of tweaking.

2. The sound has no bass. Purchase a cheap PC subwoofer (under $20) and plug it into the analog line out. Then switch the line out volume to variable. Voila. I now have a great sound system. My wife said,”that is 100 better!” right after I plugged it in.

3. Sports on this TV is great. I watch many of NFL/NCAA football and the picture looks great. Just use the sports setting and if you have a good quality signal like HD cable or HD digital broadcast you’ll rarely notice any blurring. I considered a plasma to avoid blurring for sports, but this TV is more than adequate for all the benefits it has over plasma (LED lamps will last forever, bright high contrast no glare screen, and this set only weights 20 pounds)

4. Gaming on this tv is the best experience you could hope for. Just plugged in my XBOX360 and set it is output to 1080p to the TV. Never seen anything prettier than Skyrim, Madden 12, Halo Reach, Deadspace 2, and Dance Central. These games are gorgeous in 1080P and play with zero lag on the Game setting. PS. 120HZ TRUmotion isn’t used for GAME setting and it’s for the better.Just like all other TVs with this setting, it prevents lag from processing the signal so your movements on the controller are fast and responsive. No loss in quality of the picture without the 120HZ TRUmotion. That is only needed for looking at sports.

5. Smart TV? No. Amazing TV? YES
Before you purchase this TV you must know what you’re to get. It’s a 42″ LED edge lit LCD 1080P TV. It isn’t a smart TV and it isn’t full of bells and whistles. It’ll give you a bright, beautiful display with correct colors, lots of inputs, a 20 degree swivel base, a great looking at angle and sound that needs upgrading for movies/gaming. It’ll not give you the capability to tweak black levels, but there are lots of ways to work around that. Just read the other educated reviews. Just like a good marriage, it takes work but rewards far surpass cost. If I want a smart TV I can just plug in my internet connected XBOX 360 (or PS3), laptop, or just purchase a Roku player for under a hundred bucks. No sense paying another $300 dollars for the “SMART” label.

6. A bonus tip.If all else fails and the screen just does not look entitlement to you.Turn OFF the ENERGY SAVING MODE! So many reviewers leave that on and never get to see what the set can do in full backlighting.

==Menu==
The menu is the same one LG was using for some years now. Pushing the “home” button brings up selections for changing picture/audio/parental/time/channel settings etc. These sub menus are easy to navigate thanks to pictures and big text. While the organization of the menus are great, the breadth of the alternatives available is disappointing.

==Picture==
The picture on most LCD’s is rather good these days. The 42LV4400 ranks right up there with any mid range HDTV. The blacks may be much better, but with many good tweaking in the regular menu settings, you may be able to accomplish pretty decent color accuracy and ‘pop’ (the feeling of depth and realism). As with most LCD’s, the light is more than abundant, making it a good TV for any room. It also has a matte finish, which makes it hard to see reflections.

==Aesthetics==
The bezel of the TV is 1″ on top and sides but nearly 3″ on the bottom. The bezel and stand are a high gloss black with simple contours and somewhat rounded edges. In general, it seems plain but also attractively understated. It could be a good choice for a professional environment also as a home.

==Build==
The LG 42LV4400 is pretty light, making it simple to setup by oneself. The stand looks tough enough, but a bit more weight could have been encouraging. The stand does not offer any tilt and does not swivel too well. The inputs are.Streamlined: there’s one part input and no composite inputs besides; no dvi. The three HDMI inputs are plentiful though and the USB port is a good addition. The buttons on the TV aren’t in the most convenient place, being recessed on the side by 2.5″. The buttons feel cheap, but are responsive. Majority of people will use the remote nevertheless which is more of the same. The remote feels cheap also, but looks okay and works good. Since there are not a ton of features on this TV, the remote is simple enough. There’s no ethernet nor wi fi.

==Motion Handling==
One choice I generally look for now is smoothing out motion (sometimes separated into blur and judder). Most LCD’s have issues producing clear, smooth, flowing video of motion. This is a big drawback and plasma, which doesn’t suffer the same problem. The refresh rates (120Hz or 240Hz instead of 60Hz) were used to change the way your eyes see the motion on the TV. In the best TV sets, the video is processed so that there’s no stuttering and also no “Soap Opera Effect,” a problem presented when there’s too much processing that can make any video look unnaturally smooth as the processing tries to correct the normal variations in speed that us living things tend to do so much when we move about. Unfortunately, with the 42LV4400, you have nearly no control over the motion handling, on the side from selecting a picture mode (Cinema, Game, Sport, etc). In Game mode, the motion handling is turned off to decrease input lag. In Sport mode, it’s turned all the way up, so you may be able to see a football gliding from the quarterback to receiver without too much choppiness.

==Calibration==
If you plan to calibrate this TV yourself, you will be sorely disappointed. My older 42LH90 has settings for 10 point IRE gray scale and color/tint settings for main and secondary colors. Such features as those may only interest videophiles with a spectrometer at their disposal, but the 42LV4400 totally lacks the capability to change the gray scale. Most other TV’s I have find in the last not many years at least have a 2 point IRE gray scale modification. I assume more calibration settings are available in the service menu, but I have not found how to access that, in spite of reading through the manual on the included CD.

==Other Features==
The picture menu lacks many vital settings, but does let you create a pretty substantial picture in general. See the end of the review for my settings (though every panel is different). Parental controls are well laid out. The Game mode looks to work well enough to play FPS, though a game like Rock Band may still need many modification in game. Sound is okay, but I’d recommend using external speakers with any TV. Unfortunately, the USB access will only let you view pictures. You can not view movies or listen to music from the USB port like you may be able to on many other LG models. As well, I did run into a peculiar issue where this TV failed to input any signal from my DVDO video filter. Both functioned usually when paired with other devices.

==Conclusion==
The 42LV4400 lacks the features needed to be considered a high end TV, but it’s able of producing an excellent picture that will rival any mid range TV. I’d recommend this model to anybody trying to get the best picture for the least total of money. It could best fit a buyer who usually does not annoy adjusting the settings on their TV and is not bothered by the way many LCD’s badly handle motion. It could also be a great fit for professional settings, like a conference room or waiting area.

UPDATE: I just calculated the input lag of this TV in comparison to my HP ZR24w (S IPS LCD, not CRT) computer monitor and using game mode. The LV4400 averaged about 10 15ms behind. In the other modes it crept up to around 30 40ms. These results are good and probably reflect the average use of video processing.

UPDATE (11/28): I newly added a close up of the pixels in what seems a “>>>” form. This indicates that my LG 42LV4400 is an IPS panel. The looking at angles are good as could be common of an IPS. The prime looking at angle looks to be +/ 30 from center (side to side) with only minor loss of contrast up to +/ 45 and subtle degradation at wider angles.

UPDATE for calibration enthusiasts:
Notes on calibration from color spectrometer readings with HFCR and EyeOne Display2: The Game mode made the flattest gamma but all were about 2.1 on average with the other modes spiking up high towards the 90 and 100 on grayscale. The grayscale was good with theater mode producing usually 5 6 and in Standard mode 6 8. Game mode the grayscale error suffered, pushing up to ten on many readings. The theater mode had a wildly off Blue result of 50, but otherwise the main and secondary colors were on the 10 20 delta E range. I was able to push the contrast to Y=200 at 100 and Y=0.1 at 0 without much trouble. My calibrated settings were around Y=100 at 100 and Y=0.2 0.4 at 0. I was unable to access the service menu; Pronto access codes for Harmony remote didn’t work, though they did function on my LG 42LH90.

Buyer review from the Vine™ Program () The LG LED LCD TV is a pretty basic set with good picture quality, but many unfortunate quality control problems.

The LG is simple looking in its design. It has a piano black bezel and a swiveling base that’s also done in piano black. There’s a small part of opaque gray plastic trim that runs along the bottom and a discreet LG logo on the TV. On the bottom of the set are the stereo speakers. The set is thin and is about 1.75″ at its thickest part, not as well as the base. The set is light in weight and easy to move for one person. Construction quality and materials are good, but the swivel base lets the TV to move some degrees in either direction easily. I find this quite annoying as the swivel base on my two Panasonic flat screen TVs dont have play at all.

The only assembly obliged is to attach the swivel stand, if wanted, and that was a simple procedure that I was able to do myself and took no more than five minutes.

On the left hand side of the set from the front, hidden behind the bezel, are the Power, Menu, Input, Channel and Volume buttons with one USB port and two HDMI ports. One the back left hand side of the set are one RGB PC, one Composite or part (it’s either used for one or the other, not both), one digital and one analog audio out, one RF cable and one HDMI port.

Using the set is simple. The on screen menu system and the remote are both easy to use. Feature wise the set offers and not many different picture presets (with individual setting saved for each input), a sleep and schedule timer, closed captioning and the capability to view photos on a USB jump drive. A characteristic I really like is the capability to turn off the screen but still hear the audio, which is nice if you like to fall asleep to the sound of the TV, but the screen’s light bothers you. The set doesn’t have 3 D capability, nor does it can access any streaming web services like Pandora, Netflix, or Video On Demand. As well, there’s only a basic printed owner’s manual included with the TV. If you want the in depth manual you must view the PDF on the included CD.

Picture quality is the highlight of this reasonably priced LED set and indeed the high meaning picture is sharp and clear with nice color, smooth motion, and in depth bright scenes (I get my HD picture by hooking the TV straight to my cable using the RF jack). The SD picture looks good also, but it’s many softer than the HD picture, as projected. Where picture quality falters, but, is in the shadows and throughout black scenes. In comparison to my 50″ 3 D Panasonic plasma the darker sections of the LG’s picture lack contrast and detail. Watching high meaning TV I was able to compare the picture on the two sets directly. In one scene where the actor standed in front of a black wall with a floral pattern in a somewhat lighter shade of black I was able to easily make out the pattern on the Panasonic Plasma, but on the LG LCD the wall was a hard black. For an LCD TV the picture is great, but for true videophiles a high end plasma set is a better bet. For reference I have the picture settings on the LG set as follows; Backlight: 90, Contrast: 85, Brightness: 48, Sharpness: 35, Color: 40, Tint: R4, Color Temperature: Medium, Gamma: Medium, and the other modifications set to off.

Another area where the LG disappoints is in its looking at angle. If you sit directly in front of the TV it has great contrast and saturation, but when you start to move a couple of feet off center the contrast and saturation drop considerably and the picture starts to wash out. The effect is more dramatic the closer you’re to the TV, since your looking at angles are more acute. In comparison to my plasma, and to an older Panasonic 32″ LCD, the LG has a narrow looking at angle. I’ll admit that the LG is much better than a 26″ Sharp LCD I used to have in this regard. Still, if your looking at area is arranged in such a manner that people will be at an extreme angle from the front of the set, you may want to look into a plasma, or an LCD with a wider looking at angle.

Sound quality is good, with lots of volume to fill a room, but to get the true big screen experience you will want to hook the set up to a surround sound system.

The last, and most vital thing I want to talk about about the LG is that there are two small specks of plastic stuck behind the screen. They’re both black plastic triangular shaped slivers. One is about the size of a pixel and barely obvious, and the other is about three pixels long, and depending how close you’re to the TV, may be picked out without too much trouble. They’re a manufacturing defect and can not be removed without ruining the screen. The specks are not enough to ruin the looking at experience, but they do speak a bit to a lack of quality control on LG’s part. I’ll but, that the screen has no dead pixels. (You can see the photo I uploaded for more information) 11/27/2011 Update: The bigger speck has fallen down the screen and is on the edge, so it is better but it is still there.

All in all. A no frills set with good LCD picture quality, but a lack of quality control.

11/16/2011 Update: One thing I forgot to talk about is that the screen is matte and not glossy. That makes this set an excellent choice for a room that has lots of windows because the screen doesn’t have any glare issues.

12/14/2011 Update: If you input the TV into an outlet or surge protector that cuts all power to the TV when it is not on the clock will reset itself, so be sure you set the clock again (either manually or using the auto setting) if you are using the automatic on schedule function. In my case, I be sure I turn the TV on for some minutes before I go to bed so that the clock will set automatically and the TV will turn on in the morning.
